A Tale of Two Gomdens
This is a short essay extolling the virtues of the 9" (inch) gomden.
You would be well advised to try sitting on a 9" gomden. This is the height meant for you by the dralas. This is the revolutionary height invented by the Vajracarya.
Some of it’s virtues are:
1. Your knees will be lower than your hips. 2. You will never experience any leg pain again (or legs falling asleep). 3. You will be so comfortable should you shift to a resting position that you will not believe it. 4. It will be an aid to meditation.
1. The instruction say knees lower than hips. Almost no one accomplishes this on a 6" gomden. If you do, you have to slide off the front and abuse the integrity of the gomden. Not having your knees lower than your hips is a big problem. You cannot really sit properly. You cannot really ride your horse. There is a tiny bit of forwardness that is needed that is lost and backwardness prevails. It is not so easy to attain a good seat.
I attended the 1981 seminary where the gomden was introduced. Up until that time everyone sat on a zafu. There is some speculation here on my part, but I am not wrong, I believe.
The Vidyadhara invented the 9" gomden. That is clear.
When I went to buy my gomden there were two piles. On the left were 6" gomdens. On the right were 9" gomdens. We were told we could choose. I asked “Which does the Vidyadhara prefer”. I was told, “I cannot tell you.” I became confused, bewildered, fell into a faint and left. I came back later and the same thing happened. I came back a third time and finally the gentleman told me, “The Vidyadhara prefers the 9" gomden but we are not allowed to say that.”
There was a lot of resistance to switching to the gomden and there was absolute rebellion among the inner group to the 9" gomden. A compromise was reached and in typical mishap lineage way we have this wonderful system of the one and a half fold gomden, a 3" gomden sitting upon a 6" gomden. It is so flexible. Please give it a try. You will be amazed.
